Gotthard Graubner Radierungen

Gotthard Graubner is one of the pre-eminent 20th-century German artists. Born in 1930 in Erlbach in the Vogtland region, the painter took part twice in the documenta in Kassel and represented Germany at the Venice Biennial in 1982. His single-minded persistence in developing his series of "cushion painting" and "color-space bodies" brought him international fame. A central theme in Graubner's work is the exploration of color and the way it can be used to create the illusion of space. The Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe is now mounting the first comprehensive survey of the artist's prints, a little-known and yet highly independent component of his oeuvre. Following acquisitions in 2003 and 2007 and a generous gift by the artist for the exhibition, the museum now boasts with its more than 200 unique etchings the world's largest holdings of his printed works in a public collection. The catalog, with essays by Dorit Schäfer and Nina Trauth, opens up this works complex in a richly illustrated tribute to Graubner's standing and the remarkable diversity of his graphic works.
