Hans Pieler / Wolf Lützen Transit

If you wanted to drive from West Germany to West Berlin before 1989, you had to take the so-called "transit route," a kind of corridor you had to stay on the whole trip. At the beginning and end of your transit, you would have to pass through endless passport controls by the East German border guards. Taking pictures en route was strictly prohibited. Hans Pieler and Wolf Lützen didn't let that stop them; in October 1984 they drove the transit route from Hamburg to Berlin in a Volkswagen van, Pieler and Lützen taking hundreds of photos from the passenger seat – mostly frontal or sideways views out the window. They had adjusted the rear-view mirror to deliver an additional mirror image, sometimes to confusing effect. No colleague produced a comparable photo series on the transit route. The account of his trip is neither representative nor linearly narrated, but instead subjective and individual. And yet this unusual glimpse of East Germany today, 30 years later, is a valuable historical document – and a reminder of the two Germanys that were finally reunited 25 years ago.
