Harald Braun Geldplastik 01

Harald Braun, born in 1959, is part of the generation who used the tools of unconventional emphasis on materiality and conceptual ideas to fight against the 1980s trend for art to emulate slick product design that many of his colleagues had succumbed to. The catalogue GELDPLASTIK 01 concentrates for the first time on the many-sided theme of economic aspects in the work of the Stuttgart sculptor, draftsman and performer. Braun draws his inspiration from various sources in the world of finance: Dollar signs, stock exchange graphics, coin-like pewter casts or cow hides are emblems that recur in the works groups executed from 2005 to 2007. In his current Geldplastiken, the artist makes reference to the sometimes absurd dependencies and tension-laden relationships between value systems in our society, in which misery and luxury are close neighbors. While his earlier works started with a prescribed physical weight, about 72 kilograms, which was to be attained precisely in his Gewichtsplastiken, in his Geldplastiken Braun refers to the non-material level of both the artwork and the economy: The actual weight is replaced by the psychologically influenced, abstract dimensions of the value shown on the coin. This exhibition catalog is published in collaboration with Kunsthalle Wilhelmshaven (exhibition: September 28 to December 2, 2007)
