Helinä Hukkataival Space Between Ritual and Carnival

Helinä Hukkataival, a Finnish visual artist, works with video and photography, live performance art and performance installations. Her work establishes new connections between general meaning and singular experiences. She aims to reach a universal level of understanding within each personal experience by staging small incidents, subtle, relative shades that influence us so subtly that we hardly notice it. In her performances, Hukkataival emphasizes the meanings and modes of communication that characterize the visual as both uniquely ocular and yet multi-sensuous. Her quiet and slow performances arrest the usual hasty rhythm of everyday life and thus fundamentally transform our present. One finds traces of Zen philosophy and minimalist aesthetics in her methods. She often takes everyday items and transforms their original functions, proposing a link between the aesthetic experience and everyday life. Hukkataival moves objects, elements and phenomena between varying times and cultures, creating new situations and unlikely contexts. Through her performances she investigates the relationship between the artist and the audience, the physical and social space we share.
