Heribert Friedl Art is Nonvisual Arbeiten 1994 – 2014

For almost 20 years, Heribert Friedl has been experimenting with scents and their effects. He combines his spatial installations with certain odors, which he subsumes under the term "nonvisualobjects." This approach results in works that are experienced primarily through the sense of smell and only secondarily in visual terms. The "viewers" associate the smells with their own memories, so that each person forms a different image in his or her mind. In his more recent work, Friedl links smells to text, asking for example "What does yellow smell like?" This body of work, which Friedl has systematically developed over the course of several years, has in the meantime become a complex system of subjective perception and objective specification. The publication offers an overview of Friedl's numerous exhibition projects, realized at venues including the Kunstverein Arnsberg, Museum Folkwang in Essen, and the Kunsthalle zu Kiel. Heribert Friedl (b. 1969) studied sculpture at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. His works have frequently been shown in international exhibitions. Texts by: M. Braunsteiner, S. Dathe, N. Driever, H. Friedl, R. Fuchs, S. Gilles, I. Kreim, U. M. Reindl, N. Schedlmayer, D. Schrage, N. Sönmez, T. Wagner et al.
