The New York-based photographer and filmmaker Daniel Traub published his second photo book at Kehrer: Little North Road . Africa in China!

Inspired by portrait photographers Wu Yong Fu and Zeng Xian Fang, Traub became interested in the hustle and bustle on a pedestrian bridge in the middle of Guangzhou, China. Equipped with digital cameras, Wu Yong Fu and Zeng Xian Fang have made a living making portraits for Africans who wanted a memento of their time in China. In collaboration with the two street photographers, Traub extended their perspective exploring the broader dynamics of the area and providing a context through which to look at the work of Wu and Zeng. In the book, the bridge remains a key motif signifying a symbolic gateway from Africa into China.

The book’s topic is an important matter as China’s power and reach have grown making a new center of gravity. In this context, Guangzhou has become a magnet for Africans and other groups who have come in search of opportunity and to trade in the goods produced in the Pearl River Delta. Recent developments, however, call into question whether this cosmopolitanism is an inevitable part of China’s future or a moment that has already passed.

Traub's earlier projects also show a vast interest in Chinese culture. Since 1999, he has been engaged with long-term photographic projects in China, including the series Simplified Characters, Peripheries, as well as his documentary films Barefoot, Xu Bing: Phoenix and many other works.
