Pavel Schmidt SEIN / SEINE

Pavel Schmidts works, a comprehensive overview of which is presented here for the first time, explore the ideal of beauty pursued throughout the history of art and how this ideal is reflected in our own society through the media and in our own homes. He takes kitschy replicas of famous sculptures and alienates, deforms and sometimes even detonates them. Venus, David, gods and heroes stand here for wine culture, while the garden gnome embodies the culture of beer. In his pyrotechnical/musical celebrations, Schmidt puts the pieces of the destroyed objects back together again to create new works bearing his own signature. Born in 1956, Pavel Schmidt works in Switzerland, Munich and Paris. He attended the Academy in Munich and was Daniel Spoerris assistant for a few years. In addition to his art events and sculptural work, Schmidt is also known for his drawings, which include interpretations of the works of Franz Kafka.
