Visual art has long favored an idealizing conception of peasantry. Until the twentieth century, it often depicted peasant life in the cycle of nature. A grain field in the autumn sun or a mower in the field are images we know from artists such as Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Giovanni Giacometti. The idyll of the peasantry of yore gives way in contemporary art to a questioning of soil erosion or over-cultivation.
