Product information "Deep Action"

The band Deep Action – Wolfgang Petrick and master students from 1975 to 2005 – unites 25 artists who have not only quite diverse positions, but also live and work scattered across different continents. For the exhibition in Berlin's Kolbe Museum and this publication, however, they all come back to where they studied: the Germans Alexander Roob and Michael Schulze, Yusob Kim from Korea, Mark Hipper from South Africa, Arturo Miranda from Mexico City, and many others. Common to all the participants is that they studied with Wolfgang Petrick – one of the most important figures of Critical Realism in the 1970s – at the Hochschule der Künste (College of Arts) and today's Universität der Künste (University of the Arts) in Berlin in the period between 1975 and 2005. In this span of thirty years, the former Petrick students have had a wide variety of artistic intersections and encounters. The symbol-laden site Berlin also ties all the participants together to this day; and thus, despite differing backgrounds and cultures, a complex network arises, pointing into the future and comprising all aspects of contemporary art production: painting, drawing, photography, installation, objects, and multimedia. The forms of expression of the "ex-Petri(ck)ates" are not only many-faceted; the encounter among their different conceptions also results in some explosive constellations.
