Giovanni Giacometti Arbeiten auf Papier
This book, published to accompany the exhibition of the same name in Solothurn and Chur, aims to show comprehensively for the first time that Giovanni Giacometti (1868-1933) was as outstanding a woodcut artist, draftsman, and watercolorist as he was a painter. This closes a great gap in the reception of Giacometti, since attention until now has focused primarily on his oil paintings. Considering the wide range of techniques and styles that the artist employed in all phases of his work, the consistency of Giacometti's themes and his high artistic rank is also rendered visible. Of special quality are the woodcuts that start in 1907, in which he was interested in the atmospheric play of light and shadow. He thereby created impressive pictures equal to the best works of the German Expressionists. The book brings together some 130 of Giacometti's works from important private and public collections.
