Since the early twentieth century, female photographers have visited distant destinations with their cameras, often under strenuous conditions. For some, a journalistic assignment prompted them to travel to foreign countries, while others worked on freelance artistic projects or documented archaeological excavations or doomed sites. The photographs reproduced here, made between the 1920s and today, provide insight into different countries, convey impressions of the everyday life of their respective populations and reveal the beauty of local landscapes. The photographs also reveal a lot about the individual aesthetics of these German-speaking female photographers, as well as their interest in subjects that recur over generations. Finally, it becomes clear how fluid the boundary can be between commissioned photography and artistic photographs created for personal projects.
