Kunstforum Wien Hubert Schmalix
The Bank Austria Kunstforum is devoting a comprehensive exhibition to the works of Hubert Schmalix (b. 1952 in Graz, lives and works in Vienna and Los Angeles), the doyen of Austrian New Painting. In addition to selected earlier pieces, the exhibition's focus will be on current paintings. Hubert Schmalix's oeuvre in painting is frequently classified under the term "Neue Wilde", New Wild Painting, although his "wild phase" is actually limited to the early 1980s. Afterwards we see the emergence of a more constructivist and concentrated painterly process. Schmalix comprehends the picture surface as an arrangement of color fields between figuration and abstraction. Delicately graceful figures become formal islands surrounded by spacious monochrome zones. The nude has always assumed a central role in Schmalix's imagery; erotic, in more recent works even lascivious, flirting with pornography. However, Schmalix undermines the sensually seductive dimension by disrupting it with his planar painting and by relativising the illusionary seeming of the object. The protagonists become painterly signs, templates, that run serially through the artist's pictures – separate or as a kind of module in the larger context of the picture, paired with floral, ornamental, and landscape motifs.
