Malte Wandel Einheit, Arbeit, Wachsamkeit Die DDR in Mosambik
In "Unity, work, vigilance," Malte Wandel tells the story of the "Madgermanes" – around 16,000 young Mozambique nationals who lived for over seven years as contract workers in the former state of East Germany. Even today, 20 years after their return to Mozambique, most of them are by no means reintegrated and still live in great poverty. Up to 80% of the wages they earned in the GDR were withheld and sent as pension payments to Mozambique – money they were to receive upon their return. But the government there is stalling, apparently in an effort to sit out the conflict. "We wanted to throw a small party. It would be simple. There is a big church, right here. We could borrow 200 chairs. We could slaughter a cow, roast something, drink a few beers. But unfortunately: Only the Germans can celebrate this day. We have absolutely no reason to celebrate," says the president of the "Madgermanes," José Alfredo Cossa, in perfect German on November 9, 2009, at the "Base Central Madgermany" in Maputo.
