Max Beckmann in Baden-Baden
For several weeks between 1935 and 1937, Max Beckmann stayed in a sanatorium in Baden-Baden to stabilize his poor health. In 1933, he had lost his teaching position at the Städelschule in Frankfurt and lived reclusively in Berlin. A short time after his last visit to Baden-Baden in 1937, he emigrated with his wife to Amsterdam. The catalogue shows the group of eleven paintings and 26 drawings and sketches that can be traced to Max Beckmann's stays in Baden-Baden and the walks he took from there. Against the backdrop of the period's history and Beckmann's critical life situation, the picture motifs from the spa city appear in a new light. The depicted landscapes and people mirrored Beckmann's state in the time before his exile; their inner drama makes them far more than a reflection of the mood of the 1930s. The motifs from Baden-Baden are flanked by additional paintings, sculptures, and works on paper from the 1930s: key pictures that condense Beckmann's central themes, which all interested him at the same time; these pictures enable us to find the place of the Baden-Baden works in the context of his oeuvre.
