Paul Pretzer Fummeln für Fortgeschrittene
Fumbling for the Advanced shows works by the young painter Paul Pretzer. The title already takes us straight to the heart of the clever, bizarre and tragicomic cosmos the artist has created. Fumbling takes place in many of his paintings – but in iconographically familiar poses and a painting style recalling the Old Masters. In Pretzer's frequently small-format paintings a variety of strange hybrid creatures and chimeras frolic about. The scenes at times evoke the memorable figures from cautionary tales for German children, like Suppenkaspar who didn't want to eat, or Pious Helen, who really wasn't so pious after all. Pretzer draws on the best of them, quoting skillfully and calling into question the conventions of earnestness in the way we look at art.
