Petra de Castro & Helmut Fricke Ursprung Die lange Straße des Sandes II
This publication takes as its starting point the travelog of the legendary Italian filmmaker and poet Pier Paolo Pasolini, Lunga Strada di Sabbia, published in 1959. Traveling along the entire Italian coastline from Ventimiglia to the Slovenian border, Pasolini recorded his impressions in a weekly chronicle. This trajectory inspired author Petra de Castro and photographer Helmut Fricke to undertake their own seven-week journey along Italy’s coastline. Through image and text, they create a multifaceted portrait of contemporary Italy— sixty-seven years after Pasolini. Between observation and reflection, a personal and atmospherically dense narrative unfolds: an inner journey through landscapes, encounters, and processes of cultural transformation. The work engages with Pasolini’s writing and cinematic thinking, connecting it to contemporary perspectives on a country in transition.
