Robert Nickelsberg Kashmir, the Valley
In 1989, a popular rebellion began against Indian misrule in the Himalayan state of Jammu and Kashmir. Neighboring Pakistan, India’s historic rival, took advantage of a militarized environment to fan the flames inside Indianadministered Kashmir. With its massive weapons inventory, Pakistan used its access to a jihad-inspired population of Islamist fighters and employed a strategy focused on revenge against India across its eastern Himalayan border. India and Pakistan had already fought three wars since their establishment during Partition in 1947. Photographer Robert Nickelsberg began documenting the Kashmir conflict in 1989 while working for Time magazine based in New Delhi, India. His coverage of the South Asian region spans more than twenty years, from 1989 to 2011.
