The historical transformation of Chemnitz, European Capital of Culture 2025

Chemnitz will be the European Capital of Culture in 2025. The photographer Ruediger Glatz chose the old Sorbian name »Kamenica« for his portrait of the city, referring to Chemnitz’s long history. He shows us architectural and urban features that, as visual chroniclers of the past, document the city’s historical and cultural transformation. The sometimes abstract, painterly images create an artistic cityscape, marked by the photographer’s personal impressions. The sensitive black-and-white images make us curious about the coming year in which Chemnitz will become a European cultural metropolis. The series of works was created as part of the HALLENKUNST Artist in Residence program.
