Product information "Shadow Play"

This comprehensive catalog book documents the international exhibition project Schattenspiel – Schatten und Licht / Shadow Play – Shadow and Light in contemporary art. The Danish museum Kunsthallen Brandts Klædefabrik took the 200th birthday of Hans Christian Andersen as an occasion to bring together literature and visual art: the core of the project is Hans Christian Andersen's art fairy tale "The Shadow", written in 1846-47, which can be regarded as one of his most complex and darkest texts and simultaneously as one of the high points of Romantic literature in Europe. In his art fairy tale, Andersen manages a kind of phenomenology of the shadow by working literarily with a great variety of forms of the physical appearance of the shadow and shaping them into wonderful psychological images. In an age of the disembodiment of information and images, the shadow is booming again. So the exhibition puts the story's immense treasury of images in vibrant dialog with international contemporary art. The catalog book is planned to assemble 30 international artists, like Christian Boltanski, Olafur Eliasson, Fred Eerdekens, Dan Graham, Marcel Duchamp, Rebecca Horn, Per Kirkeby, Shirin Neshat, Sigmar Polke, Wolfgang Tillmans. In this way, the entire spectrum of contemporary art is involved, with video art, film, sound art, photography, and painting.
