Product information "Wolfgang Zurborn"

Crowds brings together, for the first time, Wolfgang Zurborn’s photographic archive from the 1980s and 1990s. For this publication, he digitized hundreds of analog color negatives, creating a richly layered panorama of a society in transition. At its centre is the human figure—embedded in social structures, shaped by collective dynamics, and permeated by media influence. Zurborn’s gaze resists straightforward interpretation: his subjects neither dissolve into the anonymity of the crowd nor stand apart as isolated individuals. Instead, Crowds reveals a dense web of relationships, affiliations, and tensions. Through nuanced color photographs, complex constellations of people in diverse groupings come into focus, inviting reflection on the enduring question of what it means to live a self-determined life.
