In Darmstadt, the majority of the romanticism drawings were acquired at the time when they were created – i.e. by contemporaries. What were the reasons? Wherein lay the quality of these works? To what extent do they reflect the conflicts of the present? What is their relationship with history? So far, the Darmstadt romanticism collection has appeared particularly in monographic exhibitions. The exhibition Zwischen Aufklärung und Romantik (Between Enlightenment and Romanticism) at the Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt is now cutting swaths through the extensive portfolio for the first time so as to go beyond the local level and to highlight the supraregional significance of the promotion of art in the former Grand Duchy of Darmstadt.
