Lili Almog Betweenness

Israeli born photo artist Lili Almog is renowned for her intimate spiritual portraits of women’s cultural identities around the world. Her photography offers an active, even rebellious engagement with cultural patterns to convey her own experience as a Jewish woman caught between tradition, religion, and mythology. Inspired by extremist Jewish women covered in black and who could easily be mistaken for a typical Muslim woman or a Catholic nun, she started to explore the veiling phenomena by intentionally removing specific religious symbols from her subjects and focusing on the psychological interaction between the subject and the viewer. By placing the concealed woman in a classic studio environment, Almog contradicts the preconceived traditional expectations of the western nude female model and revisits her social placement.
