Alessandro Imbriaco Der Garten
In his mystical, often dark photo series Alessandro Imbriaco portrays a swampy rural area situated in the center of the megacity of Rome that has become home to a small community of dropouts and illegal migrants. In his images he describes the beauty and the hardness of living in the twilight of this small patch of nature. The series focuses on one family in particular, that of six-year-old Angela, who have installed themselves in a shack beneath a bridge of the ring road. Here Angela was born, her "garden" is a small swamp created by the Aniene River, which runs in front of the shack. Recent attempts to designate it a nature reserve, due to its particular fauna, have failed. It is to be feared that soon Imbriaco's documentation will be the only thing left to remind us of this unique "garden". Alessandro Imbriaco (b. 1980 in Salerno, Italy) attended the Scuola Romana di Fotografia and the Joop Swart Masterclass. He has won the World Press Photo Award and the Canon Award for Young Photographers. His work has been exhibited around Europe, as well as in the US. His images have ap- peared in such publications as L'Espresso, Le Monde, D-la Repubblica, Rolling Stone, Wired and Vanity Fair, among others. "The Garden" was presented in Foam Magazine's Talent issue in fall 2011.
