Product information "C/O Berlin Talents 31"

The series of photographs Latvian artist Iveta Vaivode produced on her first trip to her family's homeland is a visual excursion to a place both foreign and familiar. Within the series, photography becomes a medium not just to preserve but to "create" memories. Vaivode's quiet individual portraits, tranquil interiors, and poetic landscapes comprise an ethnological long-term study of a remote village in East Latvia. Vaivode's photographs not only convey the unhurried, almost archaic pace of village life; they also reveal the slow evolution of the series itself. As an outsider, the artist had to approach her subjects slowly and earn their trust and openness gradually. It was through this process that she was able to capture an unusual interior perspective on a closed community in the tradition of classic documentary photographers such as Josef Koudelka, Joakim Eskildsen, Walker Evans, and Robert Frank. Shortlisted for the Leica Oskar Barnack Award and the Sony World Photography Award 2014.
