Product information "Der Sammler Walter Minnich und das Kunstmuseum Luzern"

Between 1912 and 1936, the Swiss doctor Walter Minnich compiled a remarkable international collection of primarily Expressionist art: outstanding pictures by Moriz Melzer and Chaim Soutine, Maurice de Vlaminck, Raoul Dufy and Constantin Terechkovitch. The collection centers on the work of Max Pechstein, a close friend of the collector over many years. Minnich was interested less in merely accumulating high-quality artworks than he was in a very personal relationship with contemporary painters, whom he accompanied intensively as critic and patron, inviting them to his home in Montreux. In the course of conversations, joint planning of exhibitions and discussions on artistic developments, he virtually became a co-creator for the artists under his wing. In 1937, his daughter Alice made a gift to the Museum of Art Lucerne of 57 works from her fathers collection. An additional 28 pictures from the estate followed in 1990. Some of these are among the icons of Lucernes art collection. This catalogue paints a fascinating picture of this strong-willed 1920s collector and presents the artists and their works by means of illustrations and explanatory texts.
