Giovanni Castell Boxen & Blumen
Giovanni Castell rose to fame with his night photos of flowers, grasses, bushes and trees. Here, he now juxtaposes these poetic images with a series of pictures he made of boxers. Free Fights, in cages or on the street, show martial gestures, wild young men, a scene focused on itself, secluded from the public. Castell approaches his male protagonists just as he does his plants – at night, with a strange, preternatural light enveloping both settings. Delicate still lifes confront fight scenes with the feel of old-fashioned panel paintings. Castell stages, directs, arranges – he is one of those he depicts, fighting alongside them for several years now; he knows what it's all about. The viewers, too, become part of his compositions; like a theater director he creates scenes brimming with intensity and emotional weight. Giovanni Castell (*1962) studied fashion in Milan before settling in Hamburg and taking up photography. He has exhibited his work in numerous group and solo exhibitions, including at the Schirn in Frankfurt, at Sotheby's in Hamburg, at the Kunsthalle Emden and at the Galerie Ruzicska in Salzburg.
