Leta Peer To Inhabit A Place
The artist Leta Peer (1964 - 2012) likes to exhibit her melancholy, strangely bewitching pictures in unusual places. In this publication, for example, she confronts paintings of Swiss mountain landscapes with the big construction site of the renovation of the Schaezlerpalais in Augsburg, an 18th-century Rococo palace whose original substance has been almost completely preserved. The result is an impressive dialog between painted and photographic pictures, between nature and culture. The To Inhabit A Place series is disturbing, because the mountain landscapes of Switzerland's Engadin region that appear in it do not "fit" as either themes or motifs in the environs of the Schaezlerpalais. The term "disturbing beauty" – no matter how inflationarily it has been used in other contexts – is perhaps the most fitting description of this complex of works. The book appears in the series "edition gallery" to accompany the exhibition in the Neuen Galerie at the Höhmannhaus, Augsburg.
