Museum Ludwig Köln Photographien führen wir nicht
"We don't carry photographs." – This was a sentence Erich Stenger heard frequently when he began in 1906 to build a collection that by the end of his lifetime would rank among the largest in Europe. Not only is it unusual that someone would begin to collect photographs at a time when hardly anyone else had thought to do so; what's equally exceptional is the diversity of the collection. A photo-chemist by trade, Stenger collected with encyclopedic fervor: from architectural to trick photography, from photographic literature to jewelry incorporating photographs, from caricatures to lavishly designed honorary certificates. We can get an idea of what inspired this pursuit and what it meant back then to collect photography from reading Stenger's 1945 memoirs, which are now being published for the first time in an annotated edition. Erich Stenger planned to establish a museum of photography based on his collection. His project is now being presented in the exhibition The Museum of Photography. A Revision at Museum Ludwig in Cologne.
