In Stone by Morning: A Journey Through Iceland’s Mythic Terrain, photographer and writer Pamela Thomas-Graham explores a place where the boundary between the visible and the imagined feels unusually thin. More than 100 photographs, accompanied by her evocative original texts, bring Iceland’s extraordinary landscape into conversation with the stories it has inspired.
Photographed in December and June, the book moves between the year’s two extremes: the winter days when the sun barely rises and the summer nights when darkness never quite arrives. Glowing ice caves and black volcanic shores give way to fields of violet lupines. Horses stand watch in indigo light. Ravens cross the sky. Along the coast, immense formations of stone seem suspended between geology and a half-remembered tale.
Thomas-Graham follows these encounters into a world of hidden folk, enchanted dwellings, restless seas, and stone that holds the memory of light. Her photographs and writing explore how a landscape can shape belief—and how looking closely can restore our capacity for wonder.
