Petra Göllnitz Ihr denkt, wir waren anders Fotografien aus Ost und West von 1945 bis 1989
This exhibition catalog brings together photographs by around two hundered of the most significant photographers from East and West Germany, placing works from the years 1945 to 1989 in direct dialog. Within this charged juxtaposition, a multilayered visual exchange unfolds around childhood and youth, working and living environments, protest, politics, fashion, and everyday life. Each photograph from the East meets its counterpart in the West, revealing both striking similarities and clear differences. The sequence of images tells of the hardships of the postwar period, the hopeful years of reconstruction, and the reawakening energy of society. It makes palpable the trauma of division, the restrictions on both sides, and those forms of freedom that at times existed only on the other side of the Wall.
Artists
Horst H. Baumann, Sibylle Bergemann, Günter Bersch, F.C. Gundlach, Harald Hauswald, Jürgen Henschel, Reinhard Hentze, Volker Hielscher, Thomas Hoepker, Max Ittenbach, Michael Kerstgens, Gerhard Kiesling, Barbara Klemm, Ulrich Kneise, Herlinde Koelbl, Robert Lebeck, Matthias Leupold, Ursula Litzmann, Ute und Werner Mahler, Karl Heinz Mai, Olaf Martens, Will McBride, Barbara Metselaar Berthold, Roger Melis, Stefan Moses, Richard Perlia, Ilse Ruppert, Thomas Sandberg, Jürgen Schadeberg, Ulrike Schamoni, Max Scheler, Ludwig Schirmer, Horst E.
