Skulpturen des 20. Jahrhunderts in Stuttgart
The new presentation of the Stuttgart Art Collection in the Stuttgart Art Museum recently placed the city in the international art scene's focus of attention. Not only in this unusual new museum construction in the center of the city, but also throughout the whole urban space, an overwhelmingly large number of fascinating objects of art by internationally renowned artists is on view: among them, works by Bernhard Heiliger, Alexander Calder, Dan Graham, Nam June Paik, Marie-Jo Lafontaine, Claus Bury, Per Kirkeby, Micha Ullmann, Siah Armajani, Joseph Kosuth, and Tony Cragg. But even prominently placed works often live in the shadows, overwhelmed by the urban landscape or escaping real notice, categorized hastily and without background knowledge as modern art. Now, for the first time, the publication Sculptures of the 20th Century in Stuttgart explores selected works of art for all interested parties. Brief scholarly, readable texts present the individual objects and narrate historical backgrounds and the sometimes spectacular histories of the art's creation and erection. Descriptions elucidate the artists, oeuvres, and sites of exhibition, so that the book also documents important artistic positions of the sculpture of the 20th century.
