Stege, Grate, Inseln: Holzschnitte von Edvard Munch bis heute
For the first time in nearly ten years, an exhibition is being mounted again in Germany on the woodcut in Modern Art. The accompanying publication sketches the central currents from the 20th century to the present. Perusing this selection of some 110 woodcuts from around 55 artists, we discover the surprising pervasiveness of this medium ever since 1900 and what a wide variety of styles it lends itself to. After experiencing a heyday in the era of Expressionism, the woodblock print has enjoyed a resurgence particularly among younger artists in the past few decades. Featured in the publication are well-known masterpieces from the artist groups "Die Brücke" and "Der Blauer Reiter" as well as important prints by numerous major artists such as Edvard Munch, Otto Dix, Max Beckmann, HAP Grieshaber and Ewald Mataré, and onward to established contemporary art, represented by world-famous artists including Donald Judd, Per Kirkeby, Chuck Close, Georg Baselitz, Franz Gertsch and Anselm Kiefer. Exemplifying the latest trends in the use of woodcuts are works of recent vintage by Matthias Mansen, Christiane Baumgartner, Gert and Uwe Tobias, and Jan Svenungsson.
