Ulrich Wüst stromauf stromab
More than two hundred photographs made between 2021 and 2025 come together in a layered portrait of the river as seen from the western bank, both upstream and down. There are no postcard views here. Instead, peripheral zones, brownfields, harbor structures, and open floodplains appear as empty stages where history has settled and the present tentatively takes shape. Ulrich Wüst’s subjective vision combines analytical clarity with poetic restraint, inviting readers to rediscover the shifting relationship between city and river. Wüst (b. 1949) studied at the University of Architecture and Civil Engineering in Weimar from 1967 to 1972. He worked as an urban planner until 1977, then as a picture editor, and from 1983 onward as a freelance photographer.
