Taking the Mona Lisa to utterly different locations than we are used to picture her in, Pusenkoff casts a new light on Eastern life and Western art. By placing the most famous picture in European art history in diverse urban and rural settings of his native, he creates spectacular contrasts of Russian everyday scenes and Leonardo da Vincis serene beauty. Having gone through certain digital manipulations, the altered looks of Mona Lisa give rise to reflections upon the question of pictorial creation, of the nature of the original in a medial age and furthermore add a surreal touch to the reportage like snapshots. Not least of all, Pusenkoffs work can be considered a subversive, ironic, tongue-in-cheek commentary on our way of dealing with pictures.
