Ruth Kaplan Crossing From USA to Canada, Walking Roxham Road
Crossing, is about the Roxham Road border site between New York, USA and Quebec, Canada. It is an irregular border, not a legal port of entry, which became increasingly popular during Trump’s first presidency as refugees attempted to enter Canada to make an asylum claim. It was closed in 2023 due to ongoing controversy. The book is the result of a dozen trips Ruth Kaplan made there from 2018 to 2023 photographing the many elements that intersected as a result of its existence. As a small but significant piece of Canadian history, it’s important to have this archive of a tiny border crossing that was generally safe and effective, as we navigate the complex, global challenges of migration.
