The Guardian, Gauri Gill wins Prix Pictet award, 29.09.2023
Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt Gauri Gill. Acts of Resistance and Repair
The artist and photographer Gauri Gill (b.1970) has been examining the everyday life of the rural population outside India’s urban centers for over two decades now. Her quiet, concentrated photographs focus the viewer’s gaze on barely perceived peripheral areas in Indian society. In an open, dialogical process that eschews documentary conventions, she has dedicated herself to concerns related to survival and self-assertion, identity and belonging, and also to conceptual questions of memory and authorship. The exhibition and book bring together about 200 pieces from Gauri Gill’s pivotal series like the long-term project Notes from the Desert. A particular focus is on Gill’s collaborative approach and her work with artists from rural regions.
