Anja Schlamann Encanto

In Encanto, a series of photographs, Anja Schlamann (b. 1967) focuses on the opera house in Cologne before its renovation and turns the entire building into a unique architectural stage. In fragments, she depicts the more characteristic areas as well as the hidden ones behind the stage that were closed to the public, succinctly and attentively revealing the traces of their 60 years of theatrical history. The surprisingly recurrent presence of the figure of Carmen throughout the sombre interior imparts an air of transience. She appears fleetingly and transparently, abounding in emotional depth and enchantment. Carmen guides the observer through the building in this theatrically enacted role, revealing its spirit: Carmen as player, enchantress, messenger, and mediator between worlds. Like a production without a stage, the artistic world of the opera unravels into a previously unheard-of, soundless original state, as if telling its own story. The photographer plays the part of both director and actress. In this production, she stages a dramatic interplay between the audience and the actress. This wonderfully mysterious performance in the opera house becomes a self-contained picture.
