Bleicke Bleicken Sylt Meine Insel

Bleicke Bleicken (1898 – 1973) spent almost all of his life on the German North Sea island of Sylt, known for its beautiful beaches as well as for its illustrious jet-set vacationers. Bleicken – a teacher by trade and later the mayor of the city of Kampen / Sylt – began with photography in the 1920s, capturing his home-island and its citizens on camera. Images from his estate comprising more than 3,600 photographs are presented to the public here for the very first time. Wide landscapes, dunes, the ocean and the northern sky over Sylt are the main topics of his work. Water and sand, wind and sunlight are his creative tools. Family portraits are included as well as experimental studies in light, social documentary photography alternates with contemplative sceneries. Bleickens images show Germany's most famous island as it has not been seen for a long time. With their artistic expression and as eloquent witnesses of times gone by, these pictures will fascinate lovers of Sylt and of photography alike.
