They are images from a world where humans no longer exist, or have not yet appeared on the scene. The pictures, Dierk Maass brings back from journeys all over the world, speak of emptiness, solitude and pristine nature, of barren purity and raw beauty. Rough snowy surfaces, bare rock walls, the dried skeletons of trees, endless vistas and jagged heights. Unexplored, inaccessible regions that only reveal their charms to those who manage to forge their way there: the scorching high plains of the Andes, the dramatic eightthousanders of the Himalayas, steppes and deserts in North Africa. Born in Hildesheim in 1943, Maass has been taking photographs for more than 30 years. His camera captures all that he encounters on his spectacular travels: overwhelming natural spectacles, otherworldly colors, grandiose rock formations. Experiences and impressions that are possible only through close and immediate contact with the landscape. Dierk Maass does not shoot postcard motifs. Instead, he dissects the landscape, using time expo- sures to make it fade in the glaring light. His photography attests to an enthusiasm for geometry, contours, lines and above all for the intoxicating power of light as manifestation, event and disturbance all at once.
