Gitta Seiler über mädchen

For her pictures, Gitta Seiler immerses herself in the raw realities of girls living in difficult circumstances. In the four photo series presented here she portrays the daily lives of runaways, underage mothers and juvenile prisoners, and accompanies underage girls in an abortion clinic in the Russian city of St.Petersburg. She approaches each theme without prejudice, documenting from an apparently unemotional stance the bitter life experiences of these young people. At the same time, however, her photographs often tell quietly and empathetically of the young women's vulnerability and despair, as well as their strength. Gitta Seiler (*1967) studied photo design with Arno Fischer. She has been working as a freelance photographer since 1998, and since 2007 as lecturer at the Ostkreuzschule für Fotografie, Berlin. "In these four series, Gitta Seiler sticks her finger into open wounds. She isolates, circumscribes and names, taking an apparently unemotional stance. But in truth, she is deeply moved by the bitter life experiences of young people who find themselves in a world coming apart at the seams. The photographs speak in hushed and haunting tones of girls both fragile and strong. What happens to the protagonists here can be extrapolated to countless others. With a clear gaze, one that also takes in the wider urroundings, Seiler limns pictures of touching austerity that can stand as metaphors for human travails." Barbara Lipps-Kant Gitta Seiler (*1967) studied photography with Prof. Arno Fischer at the FH Dortmund. Since 2007 she is lecturer at the Ostkreuzschule für Fotografie, Berlin.
