Gudrun Kemsa Moving Images

Gudrun Kemsas photographic pictures and videos are works on space, time, and motion. Kemsa has long been an insider tip among the photography stars of Dusseldorf, like Thomas Struth, Candida Höfer, and Andreas Gursky. The photo book Moving Images presents her new work series. Again and again, Kemsa glances at architectural situations, in which she documents changing light conditions, thus making the passage of time pictorial. The results are photo series with excerpts from real natural or urban structures, streets, parks, squares, rooms, and buildings whose appearance and effect are determined by the light that appears and the shadows thereby cast. The motif itself is broken down into bright and dark surfaces and lines. In Kemsas most recent series, titled Choreographies, by contrast, people appear arranged on huge panorama formats, captured from a frog-eye view in their motion, without recognizable relationships to sculptural settings in an unbounded, timeless pictorial space (Susanne Wedewer). Gudrun Kemsa was born in 1961 and studied Sculpture at the Dusseldorf Academy of Arts under Karl Bobek and David Rabinowitch before her interest shifted to photography. She has received grants and prizes and has worked in Italy, Israel, and the USA. Since 2001, she has been a Professor for Moving Images and Photography at the Technical College of the Lower Rhine, Krefeld. She lives and works in Dusseldorf. Kemsas works have been shown in numerous exhibitions, especially in Germany, Italy, and Canada, and are represented in many private and public collections.
