Johanna Smiatek Don't touch

Object artist Johanna Smiatek treats in her work the world of beautiful appearances, of fashion and other visual fixations. Everyday objects are subtly transformed, their essence taken to absurd extremes. Often, they're made to vibrate by means of an electric motor devised by the artist. These "comic/tragic" objects thus take on a life of their own, at once amusing us and making us feel somehow uneasy. London publicist Mark Gisbourne explains the special features of Smiatek's working method in his essay. And Marc Wellmann (Georg-Kolbe-Museum, Berlin) describes works that were shown in a solo exhibition of the artist's work at Galerie Kunstpunkt in Berlin. Smiatek (*1967) lives and works in Berlin. This elaborately designed publication offers a current overview of her work.
