Karsten Thormaehlen Mit hundert hat man noch Träume

They experienced and survived the 20th century with its two world wars, de struction and reconstruction, division and reunification. They have lived a century: the photographer Karsten Thormaehlen has portrayed more than forty men and women aged 100 years or over. His photo series pays homage to old age, showing us the dignity and beauty of aging with great re spect but without glorification. The installation he created in 2008, Living a Century, has been successfully presented at numerous exhibitions, to great media acclaim. Karsten Thormaehlen (*1965) studied philosophy, art history and communication design. From 1993 to 2002 he worked as an art and creative director in New York, Hamburg and Berlin, where he collab orated with prominent photographers such as Peter Lindbergh and Nathaniel Goldberg to develop advertising campaigns for luxury brands. He has been self-employed since 2003, with his own photo studio, and has photographed many internationally known artists, designers, athletes and film actors. Thormaehlen is a member of the prestigious Association of Freelance Photo Designers (Bund Freischaffender Fotodesigner – BFF). He has won several awards for his works, which have been shown in exhibitions both in Germany and abroad, including at the Fotomuseum Winterthur, Kunsthaus Hamburg and the Frankfurter Zollamtsaal /MMK.
