Marten Georg Schmid Zwischenzeit

Marten Georg Schmid (b. 1977) is a nomad of the art scene. A sculptor, draftsman, and installation artist, he roams the country, appearing in ever-changing locations, responding to exhibition invitations, designing spaces, and always and everywhere packing light – as befits a nomad. His works, just like the artist himself, often appear only temporarily, created for a specific place and time, guests passing through. Most of his works have performative aspects. The process always determines the form, not vice versa. Schmid has no use for costly materials like those ennobled by the tradition of sculpture, no stone or bronze. On the contrary, ordinary assembly-line products and industrial yard goods such as cords, wire, or electric cables, bags or disposable packaging suffice. Schmid's works plainly take up the modernist tradition of the 20th century. Associations with Arte Povera, Nouveau Réalisme, Fluxus, Minimalism, and Conceptual Art are evident. For Schmid, however, making is inextricably tied to do-it-yourself, and as a tireless "day worker," he is close in spirit to artists such as Joseph Beuys and On Kawara. (Justus Jonas)
