Palermo Who knows the beginning and who knows the end

Palermo (1943–1977; real name: Peter Heisterkamp) is considered one of the most enigmatic visual artists of the 1960s and 70s in Germany. This book takes a completely new approach to interpreting and presenting his work. The chosen theme is his open, transparent and cursory application of paint, which gains its sensual intensity from the concrete and object-like surface. The painterly aspect of Palermo's work is thus the main focus. Joseph Beuys spoke of the "skin-like" and "porous" quality of his student's art, comparing it with a cornflower's sensitivity to light. This publication looks at around 60 visual objects and drawings (watercolors) – some of them multi-part – from all periods of the artist's creative development. In many works from the last year of Palermo's life (1976/77) in particular, the colors take on an elusive glow. The exhibition title "Who knows the beginning and who knows the end" is taken from the name of one of the works from this period.
