Scarlett Hooft Graafland Soft Horizons

"Hooft Graafland sometimes spends months on the edges of the world. Until it happens. Until, as in a feverish dream, her fantasies can become reality. Until Bolivian women wave sticks of candyfloss on salt pans, the entrails of polar bears trace out a palm tree at the North Pole, dromedaries with pigment-tinted humps shuffle across the desert, hats hover over hot water springs, until a stuffed blue reindeer stands out amidst thousands of its living fellows. Until this exceptional location has acquired its poetry, captured in a photographic image. Then it is time to leave, because the third reality has now been achieved. The reality of the magic, of the reality within the image, which could never have been conceived beforehand." IJsbrand van Veelen Inhabiting the border between straight photography, performance and sculpture, Scarlett Hooft Graafland's photographs are records of her highly choreographed live performances in the salt desert of Bolivia, the Canadian and Norwegian arctic, rural China and India, the lava fields of Iceland and the Dutch countryside. Fascinated by the surreal beauty of the harsh natural landscape she utilises this as her canvas. Dutch artist Hooft Graafland (*1973) has shown her work at various solo and group shows such as Arles photo festival, the World Expo in Shanghai, MOCCA Museum in Toronto and Huis Marseille Museum of Photography in Amsterdam.
