Von Schönheit und Tod Tierstillleben von der Renaissance bis zur Moderne

This opulent catalog, which accompanies the major exhibition Death and Beauty. Animal Still Lifes from the Renaissance to Modernism at the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe, guides readers for the first time through the multifaceted history of game and animal still life painting from the 16th to 20th centuries. Some 125 masterpieces by leading painters from the Renaissance to Modernism – from Albrecht Dürer to Francisco Goya, from Edouard Manet to Max Beckmann and Oskar Kokoschka – attest to the high aesthetic appeal of the genre while demonstrating the varying fortunes of its traditional motifs through the centuries. The theme exerted a lasting fascination for the great masters, who took it up as a painterly challenge and continually devised new modes of depiction and widely disparate readings: whether as symbol for aristocratic privilege and the relish for the hunt, a religious allu sion to death and resurrection, a metaphor for human suffering and the atroc ities of war, an expression of carnal indulgence and sensual pleasures. The Staatliche Kunsthalle has gathered together works from their own rich collection and from major international museums, among them the Prado in Madrid, the British Museum in London, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the National Gallery in Prague, the Bayerische Staatsgemälde sammlungen in Munich, and the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.
