Zeichnungen Bolognas und der Emilia 16. bis 18. Jahrhundert

Italian drawings have always been objects especially esteemed by collectors. The Graphic Collection of the Hessian State Museum Darmstadt is one of the few collections in Germany that has an extensive stock of drawings of Bologna and the Emilia; it extends from the 16th to 18th century. This scholarly catalog written by Simone Twiehaus presents the collection, which numbers 195 pictures. The outstanding works contained in the catalog include drawings by Correggio, Parmigianino, Agostino, Annibale and Ludovico Carracci, Francesco Albani, Domenichino, Guido Reni, and Guercino. But less-famous artists, who are equally a part of the rich artistic legacy of the Bolognese School, are also represented. Technical data and a complete bibliography are provided for the drawings. Catalog texts on the individual works, some of which are of outstanding quality and particular relevance for current art-historical research, discuss the current state of knowledge, pursue questions of attribution, and address style-historical criteria. As a result of the critical inspection, "written-off" drawings are also presented; these can no longer be regarded as works from this school. The Darmstadt drawings make it possible to trace the crucial characteristics of the development of drawing in Bologna and the Emilia.
