Peter van Agtmael is an American photographer focussing his work on the conflicts and troubles of his homeland. Identity, power relations as well as issues of race and class are hence subjects of interest in his photographs. As well, he largely relates his work to the areas of tension in the Middle East including especially the conflict between Israel and Palestine.

As politics play an crucial role in most of his aesthetic works, it stands to reason that his just published book, Buzzing at the Sill, deals with America in the shadows of the war.

Coming home from years of covering war in Iraq and Afghanistan and trying to process the experiences he made there, the book exposes his reflections on war and militarism, memory and identity, race and class, as well as surrealism and landscape.

Peter van Agtmael was born in 1982 in Washington DC. He studied history at Yale University, joined Magnum Photos in 2008 and became a member of the cooperative in 2013. His formerly published book Disco Night Sept 11 (2014) has also been a great success being shortlisted for the Aperture/ Paris Photo Book Award and being named a "Book of the Year" by Time Magazine and many more.
