Tatjana Doll Toxic Chemicals

Berlin-based artist Tatjana Doll's trademark are large-format, frequently serial reproductions of everyday objects: traffic signs, shell chairs, cars and trucks, food packaging, vans, dumpsters. These motifs – painted with a vengeance – are displayed like poster walls in more or less their original size. But at the same time Doll always adapts the installation of her oversized images to the respective exhibition space. She constructs and deconstructs, breaks down lines of perspective, all the while working gesturally and abstractly to develop her own idiosyncratic pictorial habitat, which opens our eyes anew to things that once seemed so familiar. In a deliberate departure from traditional iconography, Doll inquires into the means and possibilities of painting. Tatjana Doll (*1970) studied with Dieter Krieg at the Dusseldorf Art Academy. She has been a professor at the Karlsruhe Academy of Fine Arts since 2009. Her work has been featured in international exhibitions and has been supported by several grants, including a fellowship from the German Academy Rome Villa Massimo and a grant from the City Senate of Berlin for an artistin-residence stay at PS1 /MoMA New York.
